The first time I saw Andrew Veldheer, I was in complete schock. I have never seen such a fit big offensive lineman. Big is really an understatement for this kid.
I was expecting to see a big kid that had some belly fat. This was not the case. If anything, he could add a few pounds. He is an adonis. As for his athleticism, he is a man amongst boys in the GLIAC Conference. He moves like a tight end. When I saw his speed and agility in open space, I knew he was something special. First off he is tall and lanky, giving him a reach advantage over any defender. He was able to isolate the oncoming rush with his athletic ability and those long arms and big hands.
I saw Veldheer play several games and each game he got better. I was most impressed with his ability to do several things well. His ability to fire off the ball, change directions, and move in the open field were quite impressive. As for dealing with the rush, he really was not challenged. Overall, he is an athletic player who has a lot of upside. He has the tangibles that can't be taught: Size, Speed, Agility and Brains. His speed at the position might be unmatched. My only concern deals with his aggressive insticts.
His combine skills were very impressive, and his natural ability along with his possiblity of playing left tackle in a power system in the pro level, he could be a late riser like Sebastion Vollmer was last year for the New England Patriots in the 2nd round, and could have similar success.
