McNabb to Redskins Alters Teams/Prospects Draft Plans

Donovan McNabbThe McNabb to Washington trade has huge ramifications to the 2010-2011 season, I think everyone understands that. The Redskins have the Eagles all time leading passer and have an automatic leg up on the Eagles when they play them twice a year. And now the Eagles playoff hopes for the next 7-10 years lay in the hands of Kevin Kolb.

However, there are some unforeseen impacts on this trade that impact not only the Redskins and the Eagles, but also some other teams and prospects in this draft class.

St. Louis Rams
McNabb to Washington could either be a huge benefit or a frustrating drawback.

As less and less teams need quarterbacks, the trade market for the number one pick dims to near impossible. If the Rams don’t feel that Bradford is worth the risk with the top overall pick, the closes team that would make a move would be 6 spots down in Cleveland.

But, if they were excited to have first dibs on Bradford with the top spot, this gives them substantial leverage in negotiations. If Bradford were to say no to the contract in hopes of getting in a better situation and he falls down to 7, he’ll likely loses tens of millions of dollars.

Washington Redskins
The question that the Redskins were rumored to be pondering once Mike Shanahan was introduced was not IF they would take a quarterback, but which one.

However, with McNabb in the fold for probably another 2-3 years at least, they don’t need the investment of a quarterback, yet. They may still take one in the later rounds, but investing top 10 or even 2nd round money on  a quarterback doesn't make much sense in this draft.

Now they can focus on which offensive tackle they might want, with their sights likely set on Russell Okung or Bryan Bulaga, with Okung being the perfect fit, as he's a lot like Shanahan's last offensive tackle 1st round pick in Denver, Pro Bowler Ryan Clady.

Philadelphia Eagles
With three picks in the top 64, they have a lot of flexability. With some prospects like Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, Jahvid Best, and others likely coveted by many teams in that Top 37 area, the Eagles could be in prime spot to add players/more draft picks.

They have been rumored to be bringing in Tebow for a workout and meeting, and it’s an intriguing fit with Vick likely gone next year and Andy Reid being outstanding at utilizing players in their best roles.

Likely, they use their picks as leverage to get an eager team to jump ahead of the majority with those two 20-40 picks to get a franchise difference maker, and once again Andy Reid and the Eagles will add tremendous depth and maybe another 2nd round playmaker like DeSean Jackson.

Sam Bradford
If he had thought that he could make his number one money WITHOUT sticking with the playmaker-less Rams (outside of Steven Jackson, who could be on his way out in the next few years), he might have to reconsider.

He likely thought that if he fell as one overall, he’d land in the perfect situation in Washington with a great coach, depth at running back, and a consistently solid defense. Now he’ll have to live with either going to the constantly rebuilding Rams or see how far he slides down on draft day.

Jimmy Clausen
At one point, six of the top 10 teams in the draft needed a quarterback of the future, and the thought of Clausen slipping past ten was illogical.

But with the Redskins, Seahawks, and Browns finding veterans to fill the quarterback need and the Jaguars in win now mode, only the Rams and Bills are left with 1st/2nd round needs at quarterback.

I think the Bills would be greedy if they passed on Clausen for a left tackle with the hopes of finding a franchise quarterback as good as Clausen in the 2nd round, but if it does happen, Clausen could be in store for an Aaron Rodgers-like slip.

Tim Tebow
This trade might have actually helped Tebow and his projected draft slot. With the Eagles and Patriots both “intrigued” by Tebow and bringing him in for workouts.

While I don’t think the Eagles or the Patriots want to take him in the 1st round (I don’t think the Eagles really need/want him at all), they both have multiple fairly high 2nd round picks and late 1st rounders that are prime Tebow slots.

Teams like the Vikings, Browns, Jaguars and any others will have to make a move if they covet the most intriguing prospect of the past 10 years.

Colt McCoy
While McCoy isn’t viewed as a Top 10 pick, his draft stock has a direct link to those teams in that range that need a quarterback.

And with only a handful of teams really needing a quarterback in the NFL through the draft now, McCoy’s stock varies greatly come draft day. The Redskins were one of the top suitors, but with McNabb they’re safe for now, and only Cleveland and Buffalo remain strongly in the hunt for McCoy.

His best case scenario now I think would be landing in Minnesota with the 30th overall pick. But he could easily fall out of the Top 50 and be there for Minnesota’s second rounder at pick 62. A tough situation, it’ll be intriguing to see if his stock remains high moving forward.
